No direct service runs on this route. By rail, it's a transfer via St Pancras, King's Cross or Stevenage, with the quickest option coming to 3 hours 10 minutes - carrying whatever you've packed for the trip.
In daylight hours, that's actually faster than driving. The hour is what changes everything: Gatwick's charter and package flights leave very early, and the first trains of the day can't reach the airport in time - for many of this route's travellers, rail simply isn't a way of getting there at all.
