Manchester Airport is a departure point for the majority of journeys within the region. Located some nine miles to the south of the city centre (Ringway), it is the busiest airport in the UK outside London, and therefore there is little reason for the North Western passengers to travel anywhere else.

Things to know about Manchester airport: it operates in two terminals instead of three (closed in late 2025); Terminal 1 was closed to passengers; and Terminal 3 moved into it so the majority of flights take off from Terminal 2, while Terminal 3 is used mainly by low-cost carriers. The collections are made not from the airport forecourt but from the designated pick-up areas, and the procedure varies depending on the terminal (so please indicate the terminal number while booking).

There are alternative airports within reasonable distances: Liverpool John Lennon is 35 miles to the west, while Leeds Bradford is about 45 miles to the north-east. Passengers departing from those cities can compare airport transfers in Liverpool or airport transfers in Leeds on the same terms.

A longer journey tends to be the case when the schedule is not appropriate out of Manchester. Manchester to Heathrow transfers are by far the most common of these, Manchester to Gatwick transfers operate along the same lines for transfers going through the south east, while Manchester to Glasgow is the route north that fits better on the roads rather than the air.
