Manchester to Stansted, one of our long distance airport routes, is about 205 miles south east along the M6, then transfer along the A14 and M11, and takes a little over four hours. The booking is for the inexpensive routes coming from Stansted and not from the big network in Manchester itself.

Stansted's flight schedule will do the rest. Its flights are early morning departures, meaning, from Manchester, it is a night departure, thus eliminating almost all other options.

During the day, the train actually wins on time: West Coast line to Euston, the Victoria line to Tottenham Hale, then the Stansted Express - three hours twenty minutes, against just over four hours on the road.

The hours are what change things. Stansted's flights leave early, exactly when this route is meant to serve them, which is exactly when no train is running yet. A three-hour-twenty journey that can't even begin before the network opens will never reach a 6am departure.

There's also the handover to consider: three transfers and a Tube crossing with holiday luggage. The road route takes the A14, leaves whenever you're ready, and charges per vehicle rather than per seat.
